DARTANYAN BROWN: Weaving Sound into Stories
Dartanyan returns to his hometown of Des Moines, Iowa after 30 years in the San Francisco Bay area music, education and technology worlds. A 5-time inductee to Iowa's Jazz, Blues and Rock n’ Roll Halls of Fame, Dartanyan began experimenting with synthesizers in 1973 while working with Bill Chase and keyboardist Wally Yohn.
By the mid 1980‘s Dartanyan was creating live electronic ambient spaces for entertainment, educational and artistic applications. As a producer, engineer and programmer for Audio Art Studios, Dartanyan was part of a team that conceived, built and operated Iowa's first MIDI- and digital audio production facility in 1986.
In California, he performed and recorded with pioneers of the New Age era including Suzanne Ciani, Paul Horn, Iowan Teja Bell, Steven Kindler and Grateful Dead associates Ned Lagin and Mitch Stein.
While in San Francisco Dartanyan became the director of Jazz Studies for New College of California replacing the legendary pianist and composer Andrew Hill. It was there he collaborated with poets Al Young and the late great beat poet David Meltzer.
"California was insanely cool for me because there I landed at the intersection of the arts, digital technology, education and music worlds.”
As an Iowa musician and sound designer, he was commissioned to create an audio environment for the original unveiling of Crusoe's Umbrella, the Oldenburg-designed sculpture that graces Cowles Commons across from the Civic Center. He composed and produced ambience for the Des Moines Science Center's planetarium shows and for the early Dinamation Animatronic dinosaur exhibits (also working with Richard Shatner on the narration in LA).
"Weaving acoustic sound sources, found sounds and digitally created audio material into stories is what I do."
Dartanyan is currently a sound designer and technical advisor for Jaimeo Brown Transcendence, an award-winning NYC recording and performing ensemble. Their latest album Work Songs is available on the Motema recording label. Rainbow Oceans is Dartanyan’s latest collection of electroacoustic ambient compositions. Available now at dartanyan.com
